Alpharetta, Milton Schools Sign On For Shuler Hensley Awards

The 2017 Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards will be held April 20, 2017.

ALPHARETTA-MILTON, GA -- This week, the ArtsBridge Foundation announced the names of 75 schools from 28 counties that will participate in the 2017 Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards – Shuler Hensley Awards.

This year-long professional development program, which culminates in a televised awards show and showcases the next generation of Georgia’s musical theatre talent, will be presented at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on April 20, 2017.

Georgia Public Broadcasting will air the show live on its nine-station statewide television network.

“This is the largest number of schools we’ve ever had participate.” states Natalie Barrow, director of Arts Education and Community Outreach of the foundation. “Our media partner, GPB, is helping us raise our visibility across the state, so we are able to reach more high school theatre programs and provide more opportunities for students and schools to participate.”

The north Fulton high schools taking part in the 2017 awards include: Alpharetta, Cambridge, Chattahoochee, Holy Innocents' Episcopal, Johns Creek, King's Ridge, Milton, North Springs, Northview, Riverwood and Roswell.

Theatre production evaluations will be conducted between Oct. 7 and March 19, 2017, by more than 60 Georgia-based theatre professionals. They will evaluate productions in 17 award categories including: Overall Production, Ensemble, Show Stopper, Leading Actress and Actor, Supporting Actress and Actor, Featured Performer, Direction, Sound, Costume Design, Scenic Design, Lighting Design, Technical Execution, Orchestra, Music Direction and Choreography.

Modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards, the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards – Shuler Hensley Awards celebrates excellence in high school musical theatre. The Awards are named in honor of actor/singer and Georgia native Shuler Hensley, winner of the prestigious Tony Award, Outer Critics Circle Award and Drama Desk Award. The Shulers are a part of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards – The Jimmy Nederlander Awards.

The ArtsBridge Foundation is dedicated to providing quality arts education and community programs that engage, motivate, inspire, and elevate the next generation of artists and arts supporters.
