Sunny skies provided an ideal backdrop for today's 5th annual Daniel Hager Memorial Celebrity Golf Tournament at St. Ives Country Club, hosted by former Atlanta Braves Manager Bobby Cox.
Taking place in Johns Creek for the first time, the tournament is a tribute to Daniel Hager, a Georgia Tech grad who died in a car accident in 2005.
"It all started on a trip to Mexico with Gerry and Kaye Litzinger (Hager's stepfather and mother)," Cox told Patch regarding his participation as chair of the tournament. "When he was killed in the accident we were in a cab together in Mexico. Kaye told me that she would like to do something in memory of her son. She was thinking of a scholarship fund at Georgia Tech where Daniel was a graduate. She asked me if I would help out and I said 'yes' immediately."
Since its inception, the tournament has benefited scholarships for high school students in North Fulton, Forsyth and East Cherokee counties who plan to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology. To date the fund has awarded 20 scholarships to the school.
Among the some 100 golfers participating in today's tournament were about 20 sports celebrities in addition to Cox, such as former Braves players Brian Jordan and Javy Lopez and former Atlanta Falcon Steve Bartkowski.
"I think it's one of the better tournaments," Cox said. "Every slot is always filled and it goes for a great cause."
