Crabapple Crossing Elementary Named Blue Ribbon School

Principal George Freiberger said it took teamwork to receive the honor, and the school still has room to grow.

Crabapple Crossing Elementary Named Blue Ribbon School

was named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence today, one of 269 schools picked, based on their overall academic excellence, or for making progress in improving student academic achievement levels.

The Milton school is considered an Exemplary High Performing School.

Principal George B. Freiberger today said having Crabapple Crossing named a Blue Ribbon School was truly an honor.

"I always say that this school is a perfect storm of everybody working together and doing things the right way. It takes all of us moving in the right direction to have this happen," he said.

"While there's always room to grow, this gives us some nice validation for what we are doing," Freiberger said.

It took teamwork for the school to earn Blue Ribbon status, he said. Teachers worked together, parents are involved and engaged in the school and their children's learning and business are partners supporting many different programs at the school. Teachers work late to develop opportunity for the children, while parents come in and support instruction in the classroom. And they support the different things teachers need the children to do.

"It makes a big difference," Freiberger said.

He said teachers and education are often at the forefront of the news with a lot of negativity.

"This is a real opportunity to shed some real positive light on some of the amazing things that are happening across the country," Freiberger said.

The Fulton County Schools principal said one of the things that U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said was that these Blue Ribbon Schools have some best practices for other schools to learn.

It's important to continue to grow and learn each and every day," Freiberger said. He said they are excited about the validation of the work they are doing at Crabapple Crossing.

"But we still have our own goals and expectations internally... We are going to continue our efforts and continue down that path," he said.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools award honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students' levels of achievement, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
