Teen Found Dead In Lake Windward In Alpharetta

Police are investigating the possibility that "Illegal narcotics" played a role in the Cambridge High School student's death.

ALPHARETTA, GA -- The body of an 18-year-old male was recovered overnight Sunday from Lake Windward in Alpharetta.

Chamberlain Ivey, 18, was found inside the lake after he disappeared from a "large party" gathered at a home on Clipper Bay Drive, the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety said Sunday evening.

According to police, officers were dispatched around 3:40 a.m. Dec. 18. Those officers met with a homeowner on Staghorn Court who thought a burglary was in progress due to the loud noises, but officers stumbled upon a party at the home on Clipper Bay Drive.

While at the scene of the party, those officers were told that a male was missing from the gathering.

"[The] investigation revealed the male had left earlier on foot and was brought back to the party," Alpharetta Department of Public Safety spokesperson George Gordon said. "He then disappeared again."

Authorities launched a search of the surrounding area, and neighbors also relayed to officers that they heard a splash in the area.

Alpharetta officers and firefighters began to search the area, including the woods and the shore line of Lake Windward with no success.

A fire services boat was then launched to search the lake and Ivey, Gordon said, was located underwater near the back of the home "which evidence indicates he was at."

Ivey, a Cambridge High School student, was pronounced dead by officials, he added. Other attendees of the party were transported to North Fulton Hospital for treatment, and Alpharetta detectives are investigating the "possibility that illegal narcotics played a role in the events that transpired."

"The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety offers its condolences to the family," the agency added.

On Monday, Fulton County Schools spokesperson Susan Hale said the system's crisis care team, made up of specialized counselors, will be on hand to "assist students who need to talk to someone."
