Blasting Begins Wednesday For Major Atlanta Water Project
Blasting will continue for four months as a five-mile tunnel is being built to connect several water treatment plants.

ATLANTA, GA -- Blasting operations begin Wednesday on a project designed to extend Atlanta's water reserve from three days to more than 30 days.
The city's Watershed Management Department says blasting operations are necessary prior to construction to create 400-foot shafts and will take place Monday through Saturday. Blasting will continue for approximately four months.
Once the blasting phase is complete, construction of a five-mile, 10-foot diameter tunnel will begin linking the Chattahoochee River and the Hemphill and Chattahoochee Water Treatment Plants. The new five-mile conveyance will connect to a quarry site that will be transformed into a new water storage facility.
