Barrow County Celebrates Its Centennial

July 7 kicks off the celebration at the courthouse, the first of many events to commemorate Barrow’s 100th anniversary.

Barrow County Celebrates Its Centennial
Monday marks the beginning of Barrow’s Centennial Celebration. Exactly 100 years ago on July 7, the Constitutional Amendment for Barrow’s creation was signed.

The signing marked the “first step” toward the final creation of the county, Kathy White, co-chairwoman of the Barrow County Centennial Celebration Committee told Barrow County News.

To commemorate the signing, an event will take place in the commissioner’s meeting room at the historic courthouse in downtown Winder Monday, beginning at 7 p.m.

Barrow County News reports festivities include a reading of “Beautiful, Bountiful Barrow,” a poem by Dr. C.B. Skelton, a reading from the 2014 legislature’s official proclamation for Barrow’s birthday, live music by Chancel Choir of First United Methodist Church and the dedication of the historic obelisk -- moved from the corner of Church and Athens Streets back to the courthouse.

The next Centennial Celebration event will be Founders Day celebrations Sept. 6 - 7.
