Barrow Fugitive Crashes Vehicle Into Two Patrol Cars While Attempting to Escape New York State Police
A Monroe man wanted for armed robbery by the Barrow County Sheriff's Office has been captured.

Raymond Smith, 30, was captured by New York State Police after a brief pursuit on Jan. 8. Smith was a passenger in a vehicle which had been stopped by a trooper for speeding. As the trooper was interviewing the driver outside the vehicle, Smith allegedly slid into the driver's seat and drove away prompting authorities to pursue the vehicle.

The pursuit ended when Smith intentionally crashed into a patrol car, according to a New York State Police press release. Smith then put the vehicle into reverse and backed into another patrol car before he was taken into custody.

In addition to the Barrow County warrant, Smith was also wanted by the New York City Police Department for unauthorized use of a vehicle.

As a result of the Jan. 8 incident, Smith is also facing charges of criminal mischief, unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree, unauthorized use of a vehicle in the third degree, resisting arrest, and reckless endangerment in the second degree. He is currently being held without bond.

The driver of the vehicle in which Smith was a passenger was cited for speeding and released.
