West Midtown Home Damaged by New Year's Gunfire

At least one person was wounded and at least four homes were damaged by celebratory shots, police said.

A bullet fired by a New Year’s reveler found its way through the ceiling of a home in West Midtown, one of four such incidents reported in Atlanta and the metro area overnight.

Daniel Mastrodonato told WSB-TV that he was in his room just after midnight when he heard a large boom, ran out into the main portion of his home, and discovered drywall scattered across the floor. When Mastrodonato turned on the lights, he told WSB-TV that saw a bullet sticking out of his ceiling.

Fortunately, Mastrodonato was uninjured, but a woman in southwest Atlanta was not so lucky.

According to WSB-TV, Vivian Mayo was watching the Peach Drop on TV from her bed when a bullet came through her ceiling and hit her in the leg. Mayo was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and is expected to survive the injury, police told WSB-TV.

Police believe the bullet which wounded Mayo had enough velocity to go through her upstairs neighbor’s ceiling. According to WSB-TV, the bullet almost struck a sleeping infant in the upstairs residence.
