Police Identify Pilot Killed In Cherokee County Plane Crash

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office said no one else was on board when the plane crashed into a retention pond near Ball Ground.

BALL GROUND, GA -- A Woodstock man died in a plane crash overnight Saturday at the Cherokee County Regional Airport.

The collision took place shortly after midnight March 4 near the end of the runway and brought down power lines, said Cherokee Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lt. Jay Baker.

The twin engine Cessna 421, Baker added, crashed into a retention pond just east of the runway. The plane caught fire upon impact, but was quickly doused by Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services firefighters who also responded to the scene.

The pilot, identified as 69-year-old Steven Silver of Woodstock, was the sole occupant of the plane, Baker told Patch.

Baker added Silver appeared to have been trying to land the plane when it crashed. Officials from the FAA and the NTSB will assess the scene Saturday.
