Middle School Student Charged with Terroristic Threats

A 14-year-old Chestatee Middle School student, in nearby Gainesville, was taken into custody Wednesday for making threats of a shooting, according to authorities.

Investigators and school officials were made aware of the situation after classmates overheard the student on Monday, Feb. 4, making comments about “shooting up the school," a press release stated. Those students notified their parents later that evening, and the parents brought it to the attention of officials.

Sgt. Stephen Wilbanks of the Hall County Sheriff's Office said no specific threat information, such as plans, dates and times, or people targeted were involved.  He also added that no weapons or destructive devices were located at the school or in the possession of the suspect.

The student, who was arrested and booked into the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center, has been charged with one count of terroristic threats.

This case remains under investigation by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Criminal Investigations Division.
