Broken Water Main Slows Traffic, Causes Sinkhole
In Hiram, an eastbound lane of Hwy. 278 remained closed Friday afternoon, a full 12 hours after the break was first reported.

HIRAM, GA — A water main that broke early Friday morning in Hiram was still causing trouble into the afternoon, after creating a sinkhole along a local roadway.
An eastbound lane of Hwy. 278, near Metromont Road, remained closed Friday afternoon as Paulding County water and sewer crews worked to fix up the area where the break happened in the overnight hours.
A social media post from county officials said that crews needed to restore the area around the water main break before roadwork could begin.

According to the Hiram Police Department, restaurants and businesses in the area of the break were still without water as of 2 p.m. Friday. They predicted service would be restored later Friday afternoon.
"We ask that eastbound motorists heed the warning signs and use alternate routes such as Bill Carruth Parkway to avoid delays," the department said in an online post.
