DUI Suspect Says Dog Was Driving

Suspect also faces animal cruelty charge after dog found in hot car.

DUI Suspect Says Dog Was Driving
An Oconee County dog owner offered an excuse for how his dog ended up in a hot car unattended: the dog was driving.

On July 2, an Oconee County Sheriff's Office deputy responded to a grocery store regarding a dog locked in a car, according to a post at the Sheriff's Office Facebook page.

The temperature outside was 99 degrees, with the temperature in the car measured by a handheld thermometer at 123 degrees. The officer on the scene also noted that there was a can of gasoline in the car.

According to police, Wesley Mark Terrell, 60, appeared highly intoxicated when he returned to the car. He allegedly told the deputy that the dog drove him to the grocery store to buy some corn.

Terrell was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and DUI. Animal Control took custody of the dog.
