Peachtree City, Ga., has them, St. George Island, Fla., has them, why not Avondale Estates?

The City of Avondale Estates wants to consider golf carts and other electric devices on their residential streets and has drafted a new ordinance that could pave the way for their use.

The ordinance draft calls for use of electric golf carts and electric personal assistive mobility devices, or wheelchairs, motorized scooters, Segways, etc., on the streets of Avondale. It will be presented to the Board of Mayor and Commissioners for discussion at the May 18 work session, according to an agenda posted to the City of Avondale Estates website.

Earlier this month, Gov. Nathan Deal signed a new law allowing golf carts that travel up to 20 miles per hour on public roads, so long as a local jurisdiction allows it. Geogia is home to three of the largest makers of golf carts.

Avondale Estates City Manager Clai Brown could not be reached for comment.
