Robber Opens Fire in Decatur Waffle House

DeKalb County Police believe a suspected armed robber who shot at an off-duty officer inside a Decatur Waffle House was shot when the officer returned fire, and they’re checking area hospitals in an effort to find the suspect.

The suspect entered the busy restaurant on Covington Highway about 2 a.m. Sunday, reports WSB TV.

Police believe the suspected robber may have not realized there was an off-duty police officer working security at the restaurant. The suspect fired in the direction of the officer, DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander told the TV station, and the uniformed officer drew his gun and returned fire.

Police said the officer was not hurt, nor were any customers inside the Waffle House.

The armed suspect ran out of the restaurant, police believe he was shot.

"We have blood stains on the wall right outside the glass door here of the Waffle House. We don't know the extent of his injuries but believe he may be hit by return gunfire by the officer," Alexander told the TV station.

A police dog followed a scent for a shot distance, but lost it. Authorities said the suspect may have had an accomplice waiting in a car nearby, who picked up the injured robber.

A witness described the car he saw speeding away from the scene as a champagne-colored buick LeSabre.
