Douglas Chairman Approved for Third Term as Chair on ARC Committee

Douglas County Board of Commissioners’ Chairman Tom Worthan is set to serve as the Chair for a third term on the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Transportation and Air Quality Committee (TAQC), having been appointed by ARC Chairman Kerry Armstrong.

The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) is the regional planning and intergovernmental coordination agency for the 10-county area including Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry and Rockdale counties, and the City of Atlanta.

“I appreciate the confidence that new ARC Chairman Kerry Armstrong has shown in my leadership with the TAQC.  I look forward to serving the Atlanta Region and especially representing Douglas County on this important committee,” said Chairman Worthan.

The 35-member TAQC is the transportation policy committee of the ARC Board. The Committee develops consensus among the ARC, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (GA EPD) and the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA) on transportation projects that affect the entire ten-county region.

TAQC holds regularly scheduled monthly meetings, and submits recommendations directly to ARC Board of Directors, on which Chairman Worthan also sits.

Chairman Worthan has been on the TAQC for nine years, and was first appointed Committee Chairman in 2010; he is a key decision maker regarding regional transportation issues and how federal funds are spent toward them.

“Nothing happens with Federal funding without the TAQC’s approval.  The members make the decisions that determine what happens regarding transportation around the region,”  said ARC Senior Communications Coordinator of Jim Jaquish.  Responsibilities of the TAQC include the development of short- and long-term Transportation Improvement Programs, the framework to guide the region’s transportation decisions.
