Georgia Men Plot Alaska Terror Attack, Foiled: Police

The men plotted to destroy an Alaska facility they believe traps people's souls, police said.

DOUGLAS, GA — Two Georgia men have been arrested, accused by police of plotting to attack an Alaska facility they believe traps people's souls.

Michael Mancil, 30, and James Dryden Jr., 22, were arrested by the Coffee County Sheriff's Office on Thursday, WALB-TV reported.

Four AR-15 rifles, four Glock handguns, a Remington rifle and 2,000-3,000 rounds of ammunition were found in a home in Douglas, about 212 miles southeast of Atlanta.

According to investigators, Mancil and Dryden planned to attack the High Frequency Active Aural Research Facility in Alaska. The former U.S. Air Force lab is now owned by the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

It has been the source of multiple conspiracy theories and, authorities told WALB, the men believed that it manipulates minds, controls the weather and traps human souls, preventing them from going to heaven.

Known as HAARP, the program at the facility actually studies Earth's atmosphere. Officials there told WALB they are grateful for the police work done in Georgia, and that they have security in place in case of an attack like the one that was allegedly being plotted.

A local gun shop also had reportedly informed the sheriff's office that Mancil was trying to buy large amounts of weapons.

Both men are currently charged with selling methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.

Mancil also is charged with use of a telecommunication device in committing or facilitating a felony.
