WGTC to Offer ESOL Classes

WGTC to Offer ESOL Classes

Starting in spring 2014, West Georgia Technical College Virtual Learning Campus will offer an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program.

"This is a great opportunity for individuals of other languages who want to improve their English skills in order to obtain a college education. Our ESOL courses will help students improve their English proficiency in the areas of listening, speaking, grammar, and composition while gaining confidence in their English language comprehension,” said Nihal Gunay, Virtual Learning Campus Associate Provost.  “They will be ready for the rigor of college instruction when they complete the WGTC ESOL program. The courses will help students to not only improve their linguistic abilities but also their understanding of American culture and college instruction in US universities and colleges."

The courses will replace the learning support English and Reading courses for ESOL students and they will be able to earn institutional credit. Students will be able to take ESOL courses in Listening, Speaking, Grammar, Reading and Composition in beginning, intermediate and advanced levels.

“West Georgia Technical College is committed to education and to making that education accessible for all of our students,” said President Dr. Skip Sullivan. “These classes will provide more options for students to pursue their educational and career goals.”

The ESOL courses will be offered for institutional credit only and will not transfer to other colleges and universities. Once students complete the advanced level courses and pass the COMPASS exam, they will be eligible to take traditional classes with transferrable credits. West Georgia Technical College, with campuses in Carroll, Coweta, Douglas, Haralson and Troup counties, class sites in Heard and Meriwether counties, and a virtual learning campus, offers over 115 associate degree, diploma and technical certificate programs of study. A unit of the Technical College System of Georgia, West Georgia Tech is the third largest of the state’s 25 technical colleges.
