The sandwich debuted on Wednesday. That was the same day consevative stalwart and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee issued a nationwide call for support of the embattled chain, which said its sales for that day broke records.

The Flatiron's sandwich sold out, too, and Cooper, who is gay, said the response from customers was mostly positive. He added that based on that response, the sandwich would likely make a return visit to the specials list.

The eatery joined another East Atlanta food favorite, , which in response to Chick-fil-A's position.

Urban Cannibals' chef Calavino Donati and her wife, musician and activist Doria Roberts said they were looking for a way to combat "outrageous and hateful things being said by fairly powerful people," including Cathy.

"Here, in general, we try to be accepting of everybody and everybody kind of leaves their politics at the door," Cooper said.

Indeed, the restaurant's regular customers include a Bible study group and a priest.

Customers of different perspectives can come together, share a drink or two with each other and a laugh," he said.

"I see that as almost the exact opposite of what Chick-fil-A is trying say, which is 'our values are to oppress your equality.' "
