Bodker: Meals on Wheels "Makes a Positive Difference" for Seniors

Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker took time out of his busy schedule to highlight the needs of some of his less fortunate constituents.

The mayor delivered a prepared meal to Gloria Mack, 68, to her apartment on Wednesday as part of the national Mayors for Meals program.

“It’s important to call attention to the needs of some our senior citizens and how programs like Meals on Wheels makes a positive difference in their lives,” Bodker said. “People think Johns Creek doesn’t have any people who need assistance, but we do.”

Bodker delivered to Mack a microwaveable meal featuring turkey tetrazzini with mozzarella cheese and Brussels sprouts. Bodker and Mack discussed the challenges many seniors in the city face.

“It’s nice to have the mayor deliver it,” Mack said. “I’m very grateful to have it. Meals on Wheels is a good program.”

Mack, who lives at Hearthside Johns Creek, has severe rheumatoid arthritis and can’t cook. Her daughter provides many of her meals, but Meals on Wheels provides some welcome relief.

“There are a lot of aging adults who are hungry right now in North Fulton,” added William Wideman, a board member for Senior Services North Fulton, which operates Meals on Wheels. “Even in nice facilities, for some people it can be a challenge.”

Willi McDowell, care manager for Senior Services North Fulton, estimated the organization provides 27,000 meals a year for seniors in Johns Creek, Alpharetta, Milton, Mountain Park, Roswell and Sandy Springs.

“Our program and programs like it avert far more costly health care alternatives often paid for through Medicare and Medicaid,” McDowell said. “In doing so, we are saving significant taxpayer dollars and providing an important community service.”
