Shy, Loving Dog Needs a Forever Home

Chip is available for adoption from Angels Among Us Pet Rescue.

Chip is a male Schipperkee mix who is 3-4 years old and weighs approximately 30 pounds. He is neutered, house- and crate-trained, will willingly go to the door and bark to be let outside, if needed.

He is up-to-date on all his shots, vetting, preventatives, and is microchipped.  This precious dog has several strikes against him: 1) he caries the stigma of being a black dog, 2) he's a special-needs doggie, and 3) he's not as outgoing as others at adoption events and often gets overlooked.  But no one has a bigger need to find his forever family than this shy little boy.

Chip came to Angels Among Us Pet Rescue from a "hoarding" case in Cherokee County almost two years ago. He was part of a group of 200-plus animals kept on the property; he was never indoors but spent all his time outside, trying to survive the pack of animals running loose on the grounds.

This poor dog was never given any socialization as he had little, if any, contact with humans.  Due to spending his formative years in this situation, Chip actually prefers the company of other dogs to that of humans. He whines on the weekends when his foster mom cannot take him to adoptions, because he loves to see the other doggies there.

Despite all the incredibly horrific circumstances, he is great with dogs, ignores cats and is good with people of all ages. When Chip's foster first brought him to her home, he was terrified of coming inside her home; his fear was so deep, she had to literally carry him inside. Once inside, he crawled on his belly across the floor and was afraid of everything - the ceiling, the lights, furniture, doorways, literally everything terrified him because he'd never been inside and didn't know what they were.

He has worked very hard with his foster to overcome most of his fears, but is still easily spooked by unknown noises or new objects brought into his environment. This boy loves his crate in the house with his foster, as he sees it as his "safe place," so whomever adopts this precious boy will need to provide him with a crate in his forever home and to understand why he needs to have a place that represents safety that he can call his own.

Chip will require a very special family to give him his forever home, and would do best in a household without small children, as he is frightened by a lot of sudden, erratic movement. His forever family will have to understand that it takes him longer to actually bond to his person(s) and that he may never be a "lap" type of snuggly dog who openly and easily demonstrates affection.

But, once he does bond with his human, he adores being close to them and loves to be scratched under his chin. A fenced-in yard would be terrific but is not a deal-breaker with this precious dog.

Chip would also do well in a home that already has an alpha dog, as he takes his cues from other dogs in the household. He knows how to "sit" and can give you his paw to shake for a treat, but he hasn't learned yet how to play ball. He also enjoys chewing on durable Nylabones but doesn't easily warm up to new toys.

Chip is content to sit by your side, accept the love that comes his way, and people-watch as they interact with their own pets. This boy has lived a solitary existence and is loved deeply by his foster family, but needs to find his place, his family and his forever home.

The lucky family who opens their heart and home to this special-needs black dog will be one who truly understands what he's been through and how it has shaped his world. Chip needs to have a human who will be happy just to have him by their side - loving and accepting him for who he is - partners and friends - watching the world go by and just enjoying the ride together.
