Briscoe Field to Get $400,000 Worth of Improvements
The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners also agreed to an assessment to repair the runway and extend the taxiway at the Lawrenceville, Ga. airport.
On Tuesday evening, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners agreed to spend $218,924 for improvements to the tower.
Among the improvements will include replacing existing glass, installing a backup generator, new weather and radio equipment as well as handrails and lightning protection.
Commissioners also awarded a contract to build an outdoor airplane wash rack in compliance to current stormwater regulations. The cost for the 1,100 square feet of concrete with drainage is $185,161.
An environmental assessment for a proposed rehabilitation of the runway and taxiway extension projects was also approved. Grant funds from the Federal Aviation Administration will pay for 90 percent of the $82,000 tab. The Georgia Department of Transportation and Gwinnett County’s airport renewal fund will each provide an additional five percent.
“We are simply protecting our investment, not expanding the facility, and I am committed to keeping Briscoe Field as a general aviation facility," said District 4 Commissioner John Heard.
