St. Patrick’s Day Green

Top o' the mornin' to ya!

Do you ever notice how many cars on the road are just like yours? This usually happens right after you’ve purchased a new vehicle and continues on for several months if not through the life of your car or until you purchase a new one. Then you’ll start to notice a different model even down to the color you’re driving.

That’s what happened to me when I turned my attention to finding the color green in and around Lawrenceville. Now that I’ve said that, I’ll be willing to bet that you will be noticing the greenery just as much as if I told you not to think about a green elephant.

Green is popping out all over, now that spring has arrived prior to the vernal equinox date, which will officially occur this year on Sunday, March 20 at 23:21 GMT. That’s the time when the day/night time period is closest to being equal. The word “equinox” comes from the Latin (don’t you just love the early Romans?) “aequus” meaning equal and “nox” meaning night.

Once in college as an art student at Syracuse University, one of my classmates was intrigued with the color black. He divided his canvas into rectangles and then painted those divisions with nothing but black, as many different shades of black that he could find. As I trekked through Lawrenceville in my quest for green, I was reminded of my classmate at SU, only this time the color in question was different. I’m sure I could replicate his experiment with the many variations I found in green.

Green was so influential to singer/songwriter Angela Kaset one fine spring day that she penned the hit song “ Something In Red” recorded by Lorrie Morgan. (Listen to the song and you’ll find my connection.)
