Greater Things ... Baby

A column by Ben Cathey, pastor of The Orchard Church.

Greater Things ... Baby

Jesus did some pretty impressive things before He left to be with the Father in heaven. He was born of a virgin, taught as a teen, turned water into wine, debated the best thinkers of his day and won, miraculously healed several people, willingly allowed Himself to suffer on our behalf, and was Himself raised from the dead. And that’s not even a complete list!

Even with this impressive track record, Jesus promised that future generations would do even “greater things than these.” In John 14:12 Jesus says, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father (NIV).”

Jesus shared these words with His original disciples but they are also a promise to every follower of Jesus for all time.

He said that the disciples would be carrying on His ministry through future generations of followers. Who are these followers He is talking about? Billy Graham? Mother Teresa? Ben Cathey? Yes. Those people count. Ha, I put my name in the same sentence with . . . well, you know. How about you? Do you belong in the sentence as well? Yes, you do. Jesus calls you just like He calls all followers. If you have committed your life to Christ, if you have received salvation and forgiveness of sins from Jesus, if you call yourself a Christian, then you count as well. Tag . . . you are it! You are that future follower of Jesus. You are called by Jesus to do “even greater things than these.”

And you thought you were just attending church. Nope, Jesus never asked us to attend church. In fact, just attending church is the biggest mistake any “follower” of Jesus can make.

But don’t misunderstand Jesus’ call. He didn’t call YOU to do anything. He called you to do EVERYTHING through him. You can only consider yourself part of the GREATER THINGS Jesus called us to because you are connected to your Father in heaven. Every teaching, every debate, every miracle, every suffering moment, and the glorious day of resurrection was rooted in Jesus’ relationship with His Father in Heaven. He invites us to be connected in the same way. A little earlier in John 14:7 Jesus says, “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also. From now on you know Him and have seen Him.”

Wow! We KNOW God through knowing Jesus. You can take part in doing even greater things than Jesus in your lifetime, but not of your own power; it will only happen because you are authentically connected to God.

Yes, you—even you—can do “even greater things than these.”

Greater Things . . . Baby!
