Monroe Opens Up the Taps for Sunday Alcohol Sales

Being the first to approve the measure of alcohol sales on a Sunday, the enjoyed an advantage in Walton County – for a while. That is no longer the case. First and now Monroe have opted to give that advantage to businesses in their area as well.

According to The Walton Tribune, Sunday was the first day people shopping or dining in Monroe could purchase alcohol. The Monroe City Council reportedly signed the final ordinance last week, opening up sales of alcohol in the city on a Sunday for the first time on April 15. Mayor Greg Thompson told The Tribune the city would have been at a disadvantage if it wasn’t passed. Almost 60 percent of the votes cast in the March 6 public referendum in Monroe were in support of the measure.

Sunday alcohol sales began in Walnut Grove on March 26. Gwinnett County voters also approved the measure on a referendum on March 6 and will begin selling on a Sunday on June 3. According to Walton County District 2 Commissioner, nobody has broached the subject with Walton County so there are no immediate plans to put it on any ballot.
