A U.S. House committee has approved Rep. Tom Price's effort to name the building in honor of Squire "Skip" Wells.

Washington, D.C. -- A congressional committee has approved a bill by U.S. Rep. Tom Price to rename a Marietta post office in honor of a fallen Marine.

On Tuesday, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee unanimously passed Price’s bill, H.R. 5612, to designate the U.S. post office at 2886 Sandy Plains Road as the "Marine Lance Corporal Squire 'Skip' Wells Post Office Building.”

A native of Marietta, Squire "Skip" Wells attended Sprayberry High School, where he graduated in 2012. He studied history at Georgia Southern University before enlisting in the Marines in 2014. His family had a long tradition of military service.

On July 16, 2015, Wells was one of five servicemen killed in a terrorist attack at the Naval Reserve Center in Chattanooga, TN. He was completing training at the Naval Reserve Center in Chattanooga when a gunman opened fire on the compound. Wells was last seen running to warn colleagues in the motor pool of the attack. He was 21 years old at the time of his death.

“Lance Corporal Squire ‘Skip’ Wells was a proud Marine,” said Price. “He made the ultimate sacrifice and selflessly gave his life to protect his fellow servicemen and country. As we near the one year anniversary of his death, it is my dearest hope that the House of Representatives will pass this legislation to rename this post office in honor of a true American and Georgian hero, so that all future generations may learn of and honor his heroic sacrifice to our nation.”
