Updated: Norcross Teams Begin Title Defenses

UPDATED with Friday's scores

Three Norcross-area teams won in the first round of the state girls basketball tournament.

Norcross beat Archer 85-36 in Class AAAAA, Greater Atlanta Christian beat Jordan 68-40 in Class AA and Wesleyan beat Paideia 83-26.

Defense of their state Class AAAAA basketball championships will begin from different positions of power this weekend for the boys and girls teams.

The Norcross girls open the tournament tonight at home against Archer. Norcross is 23-5, the Region 7-AAAAA champion and a decided favorite over Archer (18-10), the fourth-place team from Region 8-AAAAA. Game time is 6 p.m.

The Norcross boys (16-11) have a tougher first-round draw, a 6 p.m. Saturday game at Berkmar High in Lilburn. Berkmar, which upset top-ranked Shiloh to win the Region 8-AAAAA title last weekend, is 21-7. Norcross is the fourth seed from Region 7-AAAAA.

Four other Norcross-area teams also are in the tournament:

In Class AA: girls play at Jordan, 6 p.m. Friday, and the GAC boys host Callaway at 4 p.m. Saturday. The GAC boys are the top seed from Region 6-AA.

In Class A: Both of Wesleyan's teams are in the draw. The girls host Paideia at 7 p.m. Friday, and the both play at Mount Paran at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

State-tournament brackets are available on the Georgia High School Association website.
