Oak Grove Elementary Students to Walk in Celebration Tomorrow

About 450 students will walk from Oak Grove United Methodist Church to the school at 7:15am.

Oak Grove Elementary Students to Walk in Celebration Tomorrow

will be joining schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day tomorrow.

Approximately 450 students from Oak Grove Elementary will be walking and rolling to school along with parents, teachers and community leaders. DeKalb County Commissioner Jeff Rader, District 2, and OneDekalb Coordinator Bettye Davis will be joining them.

The event will begin at 7:15am with kids, parents and community leaders walking from the . Walkers will arrive at the school between 7:30 and 7:40. Other special activities associated with the walk include a parent and grandfriends breakfast to encourage community participation.

In the United States, International Walk to School Day is expected to be celebrated at more than 3,500 events at participating schools. American walkers will join children and adults in 40 countries around the world.

Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.

The event is being organized by the Safe Routes to School Oak Grove Elementary School task force. Oak Grove Elementary has received a grant awarded by the federal government which will include raised crosswalks and speed monitoring signals.
