Striking workers was the final blow for the 82-year-old company which had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January.

Twinkies Maker Hostess is Closing Its Doors

The iconic Twinkies treats that many of us have eaten over the years, is about to be nothing more than a sweet memory.

Today, Hostess Brands, Inc., which produces Twinkies and Wonder Bread, announced it was closing after 82 years in business.

The Irving, Texas-based company had been struggling financially and had been in bankruptsy protection since January 11.

But a strike by the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers union which began Nov. 9 was too much for the ailing company to recover from according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Some 18,500 employees will lose their jobs. The company said the dispute over wage and benefit cuts had lead to the strike. Today the decision was made to liquidate, a company spokesman said it did not have the resources to "weather an extended nationwide strike."

Will you miss being able to buy Twinkies or Wonder Bread?
