Bites Nearby: La Promesa Bakery

A mix of treats from El Salvador, Mexico and Honduras awaits.

It's easy to miss, this funny little place. It's in a nondescript strip center on Norcross-Tucker Road and is billed as a  Panaderia y Pasteleria - a bakery and pastry shop - but it offers quite a bit more in the way of Hispanic delicacies. No, I'm not talking about tacos and huevos rancheros. There are plenty of good places around here for that sort of thing.

This is different. Have you heard of pupusas? You have now. These are tortillas, popular in El Salvador, filled with cheese and pork or beef, lightly grilled. You can have them with frijoles too, or with chicharrones, which are fried pork rinds. Then there are rajas con queso - roasted poblano peppers, butter, queso fresco, onions caramelized in butter and sour cream.

There are also spicy tamales in various combinations, soaked in cornmeal, that you can have with pork or chicken and with red or green sauce. I tried a chicken empanada - flaky pastry with a creamy filling - that was so good I had a second one. They are quite small, as most of the portions here are.

What I haven't mentioned are all the breads, pastries, cakes and other desserts at . An astonishing array and a sight to behold. There is a cake called Pastel de Mil Hojas that is made of pastry with fruit and cream on top. There is a cornbread that bears no relation to what you're used to.

No alcohol is served, but they have what they call atoles - specialty drinks such as champurrado, which is a thick, creamy chocolate drink served hot. Also available are numerous natural juices. I hear their coffees are great too, and I'll have one next time I go, which could be as soon as tomorrow. Incidentally, they pride themselves on serving breakfast from 5:30 in the morning until 10 at night, neatly coinciding with the hours that they are open.

You can't go wrong whatever you choose. It's all deceptively simple and thoroughly delicious, and costs next to nothing.

La Promesa Bakery is located at 6230 S Norcross Tucker Rd, Tucker, GA 30084 (678-406-0563) and is open 5:30 a.m.-10 p.m. every day.
