City of Lithonia Chosen for 'EcoDistrict' Project

The program addresses future prosperity, health and resiliency.

City of Lithonia Chosen for 'EcoDistrict' Project
The City of Lithonia has been selected to participate in the  EcoDistrict Initiative by Sustainable Atlanta, one of only three metropolitan communities in the project's first year.

The other two picks are Atlanta University Center and Lakewood Heights. "EcoDistricts are poised to play an important role in preserving community pride while transforming our region into an innovative and sustainable  leader — one that can compete for localized jobs of the future," a press release stated.

All three groups will receive community‐wide training to increase their civic engagement and ability to work cohesively on issues such as land‐use planning, project prioritization and long‐term inclusiveness.

Lithonia's Mayor Deborah Jackson told Patch Thursday she is very excited that her city was chosen. "This represents a tremendous opportunity to bring the community together to identify our priorities and learn how to make decisions that will create a better community."

Jackson said this is the first real effort in the metro area to bring together diverse communities to develop strategies from the ground up. "The idea of sustainability is not just what is good for the moment but for future as well."
