There are just a few more weeks left before it's back to teachers, back to books: DeKalb County school system students go back on Monday, August 13.

Here are a few retailer discounts and upcoming dates to keep in mind as the start of the 2012-2013 school year draws closer:

Tax Free Holiday:

Georgia's 2012 Sales Tax Holiday runs from Friday, August 10 through Saturday, August 11.

According to the Georgia Department of Revenue, the following are exempt from sales tax during the holiday:

  • General school supplies with a sales price of $20 or less per item.
  • Single purchases of personal computers and personal computer-related accessories, with a sales price of $1,000 or less.
  • Clothing with a sales price of $100 or less per item. Footwear is also exempt.

See the attached PDF for more examples of exempt and taxable items during the holiday.

Back-to-School Events

  • Back-to-School Bash: The City of Stone Mountain will have its annual event to benefit school-age children on Saturday, July 28, from 6:30-8 p.m., on the Baptist church lawn in the center of town. Kids can have fun and get some free school supplies while they're at it. Radio Disney is scheduled to be there, too.

City manager Barry Amos said at Monday's city council work session that donors have given $5,400 (that includes a $200 gift card) to purchase school supplies for kids. Last year, $4,450 was collected.

There will be a after the bash.

  • Back-to-School Unity in the Community: This event will take place on Saturday, August 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Southwest DeKalb High School . The school has a Decatur address (2863 Kelley Chapel Road) but its student body includes those who live in unincorporated Stone Mountain.

Students (from all schools) can get physicals for $10 at the event. There will also be free hot dogs and hamburgers, live music, games, a car wash and other activities.

See the attached flyer for more details.

Retailer deals:

  • Black Friday in July: Target will have a  "Bonus Black Friday" with deals on select items in electronics, entertainment, health and beauty, patio and toys beginning this Friday, July 20 through Saturday, July 21.
  • Free shipping: At walmart.com, spend $45 on items with the label "home free," and you get free shipping. That includes some furniture, bedding and accessories. Also look for details on Target's free shipping policies.
  • Dorm bedding: Anna's Linens and Big Lots both have dorm bedding for $39.99 a set.
