Disc Golf Coming to Suwanee
The activity could be in place by the end of the year at a Suwanee city park.
The 18-hole disc golf course is planned for completion later this year, according to Jessica Roth of the Suwanee city manager's office. A design should be ready in July, work should begin in November, and the course should be finished in December.
A landscape architect has been hired to do the design, and city Public Works officials would do the actual construction. Suwanee Creek Park, located near Buford Highway, was chosen because it's the city park "where people go to sweat," Roth said.
The course would cause minimal alteration to the park, with a couple of trees to be taken down, Roth said.
Disc golf is just what it sounds like. Players use a flying disc, sometimes known as Frisbees, instead of a golf ball and clubs. They advance along a given hole by tossing the disc in a specific direction, and they finish a hole by tossing the disc in a basket. The Suwanee course would be 18 holes.
Suwanee's course apparently would be the only disc golf course at a city park in Gwinnett. Disc golf courses exist now at Gwinnett parks in Lawrenceville and Snellville.
According to wikipedia.org, disc golf is played in 40 countries worldwide. The Professional Disc Golf Association organizes tournaments in the United States. Also, the United States Disc Golf Championships will be held in October in Rock Hill, S.C.
