A Visit to Tucker Rec Center

Looking for new activities to try? Check out the Tucker Recreation Center.

Last time, and its condition as we head into the summer recreation season. Next up for consideration is , located on Lavista Road, just west of Tucker High School.

, as it is commonly known, is located in an old school building, and it certainly feels like one as you walk the narrow, low-ceilinged hallways. Spaces that were once classrooms are now activity rooms. You can sign up for Tae Kwon Do, Pilates, Zumba, and other classes. Costs vary by activity.  Various clubs also hold meetings at the center, including a Scrabble club that meets on Saturdays.

Pottery classes are sometimes held at the rec center, but based on a recent Tucker Patch , it seems the classes are not currently being offered. That's a shame. There are two kilns on site going to waste.

Having never visited Tucker Rec before, I expected to see a basketball court, but was surprised to see a gym set up for gymnastics instead. The recreation center is the home of the Tucker Tucks gymnastics team (though I can't find any current information about them online; are they still in existence?). Gymnastics classes are offered for beginners too, with age restrictions.

Outside, in front of the building, stands the Browning Courthouse. This wooden structure dates to 1860 and was moved from its original location to the Tucker Recreation Center grounds in 1985. The Tucker Historical Society occasionally exhibits historical items inside the courthouse. Tucker's 120th Celebration will kick off there on June 25.

In front of the courthouse is a lovely little butterfly garden. After enjoying the flowers, you might like to take a self-guided tour of the trees found on the grounds. There are handy "Trees of Tucker" guides in a box by the courthouse. These will help you identify the numerous specimens around the rec center.

Next time, I'll visit .
