Algonquin Officials Look at Banning Video Gaming Cafes

The village board is set to meet on Tuesday.

The Algonquin Board of Trustees is considering an ordinance that would ban video gaming cafes in the village with the hopes of keeping establishments solely focused on video gambling and serving alcohol out of town, according to the Northwest Herald.

In recent weeks, the Algonquin Committee of the Whole voted 6-1 against opening Mia’s Cafe at 4120 E. Lake Road -- a business that would have had video gaming terminals and served food prepared Mandile’s Italian Restaurant Banquets and Catering, the newspaper reports. The main purpose of the business was for video gaming.

Now, village officials are working to create the framework for an ordinance that could help establish rules so if similar businesses propose setting up shop in Algonquin, there would be guidelines in place, according to the article.

“We want to establish a framework so that if somebody comes to the village, at least we have a standard that they can look at and they can make a decision without having to hum through all the hoops,” Trustee Jim Steigert said.

The village board is set to meet on Tuesday starting at 7:30 p.m. at the William Ganek Municipal Center, 2200 Harnish Drive in Algonquin. The video gaming ordinance is on the village board’s agenda.
