This year's Pond Hockey Tournament, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 4, has been canceled, according to a village of Lake in the Hills press release.

Warm winter temperatures has made for less-than-ideal conditions on Woods Creek Lake in producing ice thick enough for this year's tournament.

Eight inches of ice is needed to , according to a Lake in the Hills Patch article. Much of the winter, there has been standing water on Woods Creek Lake.

The village of Lake in the Hills plans to host the tournament in 2013. Last year was the first year the village hosted the tournament, which drew 12 teams to compete and 80 spectators .

The village's Monday press release cited statistics from WGN meteorologist Tom Skilling to illustrate how warm this winter has been.

Since Dec. 1, this winter has been the warmest in 78 years, according to the press release. This winter season also has had "the fewest subfreezing daytime temperatures (just 11 of them) in four decades and the fewest days in which the ground has been snow-covered in 23 years."
