Hundreds of Dead Fish at Lake Arlington Puts Park District on the Case
The Arlington Heights Park District is investigating the possible cause of a die-off of Gizzard shad at the lake.
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Hundreds of fish washed up dead along Lake Arlington over the weekend, and Arlington Heights Park District officals are trying to find out why, according to the agency.
The district is currently cleaning up the dead Gizzard shad that turned up along the shore of the 50-acre, man-made, detention lake. Officials also have contacted the Illnois Department of Natural Resources about the fish die-off.
According to the park district, a fish die-off — also known as a "fish kill" — describes the death of fish in a local population that might be connected with the overall mortality of life in the lake. Causes for a die-off can be reduced oxygen in the water, drought, algae bloom, overpopulation and a sustained water temperature increase.
