Kane Co. Worker Struck by Truck, Killed While Filling Pothole

Steven W. Chidester of Cortland died at the scene of the crash Thursday morning in rural Kane County.

KANE COUNTY, IL - A Kane County Department of Transportation worker was killed after being hit by a vehicle while filling a pothole on a rural roadway in Kane County Thursday morning, authorities said.

Steven W. Chidester, 44, of Cortland, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred on Harter Road just north of Lasher Road in Blackberry Township at about 10:40 a.m. Thursday.

Chidester along with another KDOT employee were traveling north on Harter Road in a Ford 350 truck when Chidester got out to fill a pothole. A 1999 Ford F250 was also north on Harter at the time when it failed to slow down and struck the KCDOT vehicle and Chidester from behind, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Chidester was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the F250, Christopher N. Flamand, 27, of Kaineville, as well as the driver of the Kane County vehicle were treated at the scene by Sugar Grove EMS for minor injuries.

No charges have been filed in the crash and an investigation is ongoing.
