Visitation, Funeral Set for Buffalo Grove High Teacher Who Collapsed at School

Stephanie Ramos died of natural causes. She collapsed and died at Buffalo Grove High School Monday afternoon.

A 39-year-old Buffalo Grove HIgh School teacher who collapsed and died after school let out on Monday died of natural causes brought on by cardiomyopathy, a condition that affects the heart muscles, according to officials with the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Stephanie Ramos, an English Language Learners and World Language teacher, collapsed suddenly at Buffalo Grove High School at 4 p.m. Monday, according to the Buffalo Grove Countryside. A video camera captured footage of the collapse and Ramos body was found at about 8:30 p.m. by a janitor at the school.

Police do not suspect anything suspicious or criminal activity lead to Ramos’ death.

Meanwhile, classes were delayed Tuesday morning to give Ramos’ co-workers some time to cope with the news, according to the Daily Herald. Counselors were available at the school to assist teachers and students.
Ramos taught about 100 students per year enrolled in Spanish, French and English Language Learner classes, according to the article. She also organized the district’s summer school ELL program, ran Buffalo Grove High School’s Latino Parent Organization and Latino Family Night presentations.

She also, last year, took a group of students on a spring break trip to France, according to the Daily Herald.

“She was someone who was loved and adored by everyone in our building,” Principal Jeff Wardle told the Daily Herald. “She knew her students as good and better than anyone I ever met.”

A visitation for Ramos has been set for 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kolssak Funeral Home, 189 S. Milwaukee Avenue in Wheeling. A life celebration mass will be held starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph the Worker, 181 West Dundee Road in Wheeling.
