Minor Fire at Dresden Nuclear Power Plant

Right around 6 p.m., Sunday, a fire broke out at the Dresden Generating Station, in a maintenance building.

"It had no contact with any of the generation side of the house," Jim Lutz, Director of Grundy County Emergency Management said.

"Initially, it was thought that solvent was the part that caught fire," Lutz said.

"That’s what the fire investigators indicated."

Lutz said the solvent is like a degreaser.

Dresden is located at the head of the Illinois River. It is located in

Lutz said that because it was a nuclear power station, there was more emergency response than would normally take place. But when it was realized that this was a small fire, most emergency personnel were released within ten minutes of arrival.

The building that had the fire is inside the fence line, but it is detached from the power side of the building, Lutz said.
