Chicago Company Fires Ex-Clinton Volunteer For Tweet About Navy SEAL's Widow: Report

Tweet reportedly blasted the wife of the Illinois Navy SEAL for "clapping like an idiot."

CHICAGO, IL — A Chicago man was reportedly fired Wednesday after tweeting a disparaging remark about the widow of fallen Illinois Navy SEAL Ryan Owens during President Donald Trump's address to Congress.

Widow Carryn Owens received a nearly two-minute standing ovation after Trump paid tribute to her late husband. When an L.A. Times reporter tweeted about the emotional moment, Chicagoan Dan Grilo replied, "Sorry, Owens' wife, you’re not helping yourself or your husband’s memory by standing there and clapping like an idiot. Trump just used you," according to Fox News.

The tweet from Grilo's apparently now-deleted account drew responses from many, including Donald Trump Jr., who called the remark "hatred from the other side."

According to Grilo's LinkedIn account, he worked for Chicago-based Liberty Advisor Group. But on Wednesday, the company posted a statement saying he no longer has a job there.

Last night during President Trump’s speech, a Liberty Advisor Group employee sent out an offensive and inappropriate tweet regarding the Gold Star family that was being rightly honored before Congress and the Nation. The personal views of this individual do not represent Liberty and we vigorously disavow them.
Although the message and subsequent apologies were sent from an individual’s personal account, and bore no connection to his work with Liberty, his comments were inconsistent with the Company’s values and the unyielding respect it has for the members of our Nation’s Armed Forces. Regardless of whether the comments in the tweet were intended to cause the hurt and anger that they ultimately generated, they were unacceptable to us, and the individual who issued the tweet is no longer affiliated with Liberty.
Liberty’s culture places a high value on the men and women of America's military who fight to defend us and our families. We honor them. We want to express our sincere condolences to Mrs. Owens. We also apologize to all those who have served this nation, including those Liberty employees who have themselves served, and anyone else who was offended by these comments.

According to Fox News, Grilo's now-deleted Twitter bio said he was a volunteer for both Clinton and former President Barack Obama.

A native of Peoria, Illinois, highly decorated Chief William "Ryan" Owens, 36, died in January in what Trump has described as a "highly successful" raid on an Al Qaeda compound in Yemen.

Three other American military personnel were wounded in the raid, and as many as 30 civilians were reportedly killed, including the 8-year-old granddaughter of Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born Al Qaeda leader killed in a drone strike authorized by Obama.

Last week, Owens' father, Bill Owens, told the Miami Herald that he declined to meet with the president, who traveled to Dover Air Force base for the arrival of the fallen SEAL's body.

"Why at this time did there have to be this stupid mission when it wasn’t even barely a week into his administration?" the elder Owens said. "Why? ... For two years prior, there were no boots on the ground in Yemen — everything was missiles and drones — because there was not a target worth one American life. Now, all of a sudden we had to make this grand display?’’

Trump invited widow Carryn Owens to Tuesday's joint address during a condolence call in January, according to ABC News.

His tribute to Owens, a member of SEAL Team 6, drew tears from his widow, who looked up and mouthed, "I love you," during the president's address.

"Ryan's legacy is etched into eternity," Trump said, adding that the SEAL "laid down his life for his friends, for his country, and for our freedom." Referring to the standing ovation Carryn Owens received, the president added, "Ryan is looking down right now and he is very happy because I think he just broke a record."

While Grilo's comment reportedly cost him, some veterans and veterans groups on Twitter appeared to agree with him, accusing Trump of using Owens' widow as a "prop."

"Trump speaking for the dead Navy SEAL just now is one of the worst things I've seen," veteran Brandon Friedman tweeted.

"Our (civilian-military) divide has grown so deep/wide that most don't even see how this use of Owens' widow was inappropriate," another veteran wrote.
