Fatal Crash Shuts Down Eisenhower

CHICAGO, IL — At least one person has died and six others were injured by a Sunday night crash on the inbound Eisenhower Expressway, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Seven ambulances responded to the call of the accident shortly before 10:00 p.m. All lanes were still closed as eastbound traffic was redirected until around 2:00 a.m. .

A white Mercedes, possibly wanted for attempted armed robbery and an aggravated assault, got on I-290 at Homan heading east at a high rate of speed and was involved in the crash, Chicago Police said.

The Mercedes rear-ended another car less than 10 minutes later on I-290 near Damen Avenue before heading up an embankment and rolling over. All four people inside the Mercedes were thrown from the car, Illinois State Police said.

One man, 18-year-old Mario C. Fields, was thrown from the Mercedes and died at the scene, according to police.

Three others were in serious-to-critical condition, one was in fair-to-serious condition and two were in good condition, according to CFD. State police said no other injuries are currently believed to be life-threatening.
