Lt. Gliniewicz Struck by Two Bullets in Fox Lake Shooting: Official

An official told the Associated Press the fatal shot was fired from above in a downward direction.

As the investigation continues into the shooting death of Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, a government official told the Associated Press last week the Fox Lake officer was hit by two bullets before he died on Sept. 1.

The government official, who is familiar with the investigation and spoke on a condition of anonymity, said Gliniewicz was struck once in his protective vest and once at an angle that allowed the bullet to enter his chest, the Associated Press reports.

The fatal shot was fired from above in a downward direction, according to the article.

Authorities are investigating whether Gliniewicz fired the fatal shot or was gunned down, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The anonymous official said technicians are testing Gliniewicz’s hands to check for gun powder residue and tests are also being run to see if there is any materials under his fingernails that would suggest a struggle.

Gliniewicz died after being shot while on a routine patrol in Fox Lake, police have said. He radioed police shortly before his shot to say he was chasing three men.
