Like many, the news of the shooting death of Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz shook Scott Dehn, the owner of the McHenry Outdoor Theater.

Since he learned of the heart-breaking news, Dehn said he’s had an overwhelming sense of helplessness that he can’t seem to shake.

“Lt. Joe Gliniewicz was one of the good guys. He dedicated his life to protecting and serving his community,” Dehn said Wednesday in a Facebook post. “He was deeply involved in the lives of so many young people in Fox Lake throughout the years. He was also a loving husband and father to four boys.”

Dehn decided he wanted to do something to help. So, next week, the McHenry Outdoor Theater will be offering a special showing of Superman (1978) with 100 percent of all proceeds being donated to the Gliniewicz family via the Fox Lake Police Department.

“The movie Superman only seems fitting for this real-life superhero that we have lost,” Dehn said. “He truly was a super man.”

Gates will open at 6:30 p.m. at the theater, 1510 Chapel Hills Road in McHenry, and the movie will start around 8 p.m. The theater will be accepting donations as admission to the movie. Movie goers can choose how much they would like to donate.

There will be candy, popcorn and soft drinks available for an additional donation. That’s Amore Pizza of Crystal Lake has donated pizzas with all proceeds also going to the Gliniewicz family. And The Lemonade Brigade will be donating their time to help out on Wednesday and will also have a lemonade stand set up in front of the theater on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. to help with the fund-raising efforts.
