Sheriff: Snowmobile Riders Should Stay Off Ice

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office is asking snowmobile riders to stay off area waterways after three riders fell through the ice in recent days.

The incidents occurred over the past three days and involved two snowmobile riders who fell through while on the Fox River and another who fell through Wonder Lake, according to a sheriff's office press release.

No one was seriously injured in any of the incidents though one of the riders was treated for minor face lacerations and hypothermia.

"Less than a week ago temperatures were above 60 degrees, which means that ice over waterways has not had an opportunity to build up sufficiently," according to the news release. "This is especially true in area where the water underneath has a strong current or is shallow in depth."

The sheriff's office also provided the following additional safety tips for snowmobile riders:

  • Don't drink and ride
  • Don't ride too fast—keep in mind the terrain and lighting and proceed at a pace that gives you sufficient time to stop.
  • Use marked trails whenever possible
  • Don't ride alone
  • Bring a cell phone
  • Dress for the weather
