Deerfield, That Smoke in Your Basement May Not Be Cause for Alarm

The village is doing smoke testing this week. As always, call 911 in case of emergency.

Deerfield, That Smoke in Your Basement May Not Be Cause for Alarm

Deerfield is currently conducting smoke testing throughout town, which means you may see smoke where you normally wouldn’t expect — or want — it to be.

“There is a distinct possibility you may see a white smoke coming from your basement or the sewer drains outside on your street,” the fire department wrote on its Facebook page.

Smoke testing is done on sewer systems to identify places where there are unintended openings, which allow the smoke to escape.

The fire department advises that you call the fire department if you see smoke because they know where the testing is being done. Always call 911 if there’s an emergency.
