The windy but mild breezes Sunday blew off caps and sent flags flapping but did not discourage Deerfield’s vets from celebrating their national holiday, Veterans Day.

In ceremonies at the Veterans Memorial in Jewett Park, Mayor Harriet Rosenthal thanked the local veterans of American Legion Post 738 for their service, both in war and peace.

She praised the love and devotion to country these young men and women showed in stepping forward to preserve America’s freedoms. And she acknowledged the sacrifices and hardships they endured being away from home and facing hostile forces.

Post Commander John Coughenouer delivered the message that veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan need special assistance resettling into society, particularly finding jobs to support their families.  He complimented the Veterans Administration and other agencies for their efforts in helping veterans assimilate back into civilian life.

Other speakers included Women’s Auxiliary President Joann Harrison and Commander Frank Haney, of the local Sons of the American Legion Squadron, both involved in veterans support activities.
