Get Out: West Fest, ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’ More


Thursday, June 21, from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Friday, June 22, from 6 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Saturday, June 23, from 2 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Sunday, June 24, from 2 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Why Go: Des Plaines-area residents looking for summer fun for the entire family are invited to attend the 2nd Annual West Fest, presented on school grounds from June 21 to 24 by the Maine West Athletic Boosters to benefit West athletic programs.

Carnival rides will be provided by Fantasy Entertainment. Music will be provided by B96 Radio from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, and by 103.5 KISS-FM from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday.

West Fest also will feature food, beverages, games and a petting zoo.

Pricing: Free admission.

Why Go: The summertime series sponsored by the Optimist Club continues with How to Train Your Dragon. Popcorn and drinks will be available for purchase.

Why Go: Join the Des Plaines Park District on a day trip to Hoo’s Woods Rapture Center, Lincoln-Tallman House and Rotary Garden

Hoo’s Woods Rapture Center in Milton, WI provides programs both educational and fun: learning about eagles, falcons, owls, and other raptor species with an appreciation of the coexistence of man and wildlife. Lunch is at the historic Speak Easy Restaurant in downtown Janesville, an award-winning historic Italian villa style mansion, where Abraham Lincoln was a guest in 1859. After lunch, we’ll tour the Lincoln-Tallman House, and our busy day will conclude at the Rotary Botanical Gardens in Janesville. Their 20 acres have an international focus, including Japanese, Scottish, French, Formal, Italian, and English cottage gardens.

When/Where: From 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, June 24 at thee Northbrook Historical Society, 1776 Walters Ave. in Northbrook.

Why Go: The Northbrook Historical Society and the Northbrook Garden Club invite you to take a walk through five Hidden Gardens of Northbrook. Professional in-residence Kathy Lorden of Lorden Landscaping will be on site to answer your garden questions.
