Man Killed by BNSF Freight Train in Downers Grove

A man went around the south crossing gates at Main Street, and he was hit by a freight train as he walked between the center tracks.

A man died Saturday night after he was hit by a BNSF freight train at the Main Street railroad crossing in Downers Grove.

James G. Hill, age 32 of Aurora, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the village.

Downers Grove police got a call about the incident around 9:40 p.m., and the initial investigation showed Hill went around the south crossing gates at Main Street when a Metra train was stopped for passengers. Hill was hit by a westbound BNSF freight train as he walked between the center tracks toward Forest Avenue, according to the village.

Witnesses told police the crossing gates were down when Hill was hit.

Meg Reile, a Metra spokesperson, said the final three trains of Saturday evening ran with 90 minute delays.
