Village Seeks Input on How to Make DG More Bike Friendly

Village reps to be out-and-about seeking resident feedback on how to make Downers Grove a more enjoyable place for bikers and pedestrians.

Village Seeks Input on How to Make DG More Bike Friendly

Starting on Wednesday, the is going to be hitting the streets to talk to bikers and pedestrians about what improvements they'd like to see the village make in order to make the community more bike friendly.

As part of an update to 12-year-old “ Bikeway and Pedestrian” plan expected to be presented in October, the village is looking for ways they can adjust infrastructure, provide education and generally improve the experience of the village's cyclists and walkers.

According to public works director Nan Newlon, the main thing the village is looking for is what they can do to make things easier for the community.

“We're looking to find out what kind of obstacles are in their way that prevent them from making trips by bike or walking,” Newlon said. “[These meetings are] a chance for people to comment and talk to us and let us know where they'd like to bike, where they bike now and where they feel comfortable or uncomfortable.”

Instead of having a meeting and making the residents come to them, Newlon said, they decided to get out and reach out to the community directly. They'll start doing that Wednesday, June 13 at the from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.. The rest of the schedule is as follows:

• June 15, 2012: , 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

• June 16, 2012: Downtown Downers Grove Market, 9 a.m. to Noon, with a 2-3 mile bike ride around Downers Grove immediately following.

• June 23, 2012: Rotary Grove Fest, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Main Street Train Station.

We would also like to know what kind of improvements you think the village can implement to make Downers Grove more bike and pedestrian friendly, so share your thoughts with us in the comments section!
