Elmhurst Police Investigating Two Daytime Burglaries Tuesday

Son comes home to find front door wide open.

Elmhurst Police Investigating Two Daytime Burglaries Tuesday

Elmhurst police are investigating two burglaries that occurred during the daytime hours Tuesday.

A resident of the 500 block of Washington told police she returned home from work at about 6:30 p.m. and didn't notice anything suspicious. But while she was cooking dinner, she saw that the dining room window was wide open. She began looking through the house and found her jewelry box open and its contents strewn on her bed. She was unsure which jewelry items were missing at the time of the report.

Also taken from the home was $106 in cash and an iPad 2 from her son's room. Her son said when he got home from school the front door was wide open, but he assumed his brother left it open when he got home from school.

Police said the burglary happened sometime between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

A home on the 900 block of Hawthorne also was broken into on Tuesday, police said.

The resident entered her home through a locked rear kitchen door at about 11:15 a.m. When she got inside, she noticed a bar chair in the basement had been knocked over, a rear basement door window was broken and glass was on the floor. At the time of the report, she had not discovered any items missing.

Police said the burglary occurred between 8:15 and 11:15 a.m.

This brings the number of burglaries reported in the last week to four. Two additional burglaries were reported Sept. 14.
